Two strange men have come to town with wreaths and boughs of Holly. With smoky cloaks and staffs of Oak and laughs echoing Jolly. They’ve heard of tales of suffering. Of sadness, pain, and loss,So they have come to New Orleans to bring joy to those they cross.
From the ground sprout evergreens and from the wells flow honey.Even the saddest beggar is offered a little money.Candles light a festive glow and baubles line the walls. The scent of sweets and bread and meats waft throughout the vacant halls.
“We know your plight,” The Oak King speaks. “And wish to make you merry.”“So join us all,” Says The Holly King. “Before you ride Death’s Ferry.”The children danced, the men all cheered, as women sang bright songs. There was as much joy and merriment as the day was long.
The morning comes, the birds all call, and look in center square:The Kings of Oak and Holly are both seen just standing there.“The Wheel has turned, and the sun has rose.” Bellows the old Oak King“Tis time to pay us what you owe.” King Holly almost sings.
“Simply offer tribute and destroy the evergreens.”“And if you don’t?” They speak as one, “True suffering begins.”“We brought you joy, now give it back.” The Kings laugh without a care. And with that they both disappear leaving chill and fear midair.
